THE FAST  PATCH

Why Sleep Doesn’t Come Easy When You’re Fasting (And What to Do About It)

autophagy and fasting can result in difficulty sleeping
You can't sleep while you're fasting? Lean into it - write, create, stockpile work, build something. Or, you can remove your Fast Patch 90 minutes before bedtime and salvage a decent night of sleep.

If you’ve ever started a fast and found yourself wide awake at 1:00 a.m., you’re not alone. Many people notice that sleep feels harder to come by when they’re fasting. Instead of winding down at night, your brain seems to go into overdrive.

The good news? This isn’t a sign that something’s “wrong.” In fact, it’s deeply primal—and it may even work to your advantage.

The Caveman vs. The Thanksgiving Nap Man/Woman

What happens right after Thanksgiving dinner? Your belly is full of turkey, stuffing, and a mountain of carbs. Within an hour, you’re snoozing in the recliner, half-watching football. That's called “food coma,” and it's real, fueled by tryptophan and an overload of calories.

Now flip the scenario: imagine a caveman (or cave-woman) who hasn’t eaten in a day or two. Would he be curled up snoring? Not a chance. His brain is on high alert, scanning for threats, and laser-focused on finding food. In fact, still to this day, there are tribes in the Amazon that purge (make themselves puke) before going on hunts in order to sharpen their senses for success.

That’s essentially what’s happening when you fast. With fewer calories coming in (zero), your body flips into “hunter mode.” Your brain sharpens. Your energy rises. You’re alert, because biologically, you’re wired to go find your next meal.

How the Fast Patch Amplifies Energy

This is also where The Fast Patch comes in. Designed to support fasting, the patch helps curb cravings, sustain metabolism, and boost natural energy levels. It works great during the day—but it doesn’t exactly have an “off switch.”

So while you’re fasting, your body is already primed for alertness. Add in metabolism-boosting actives, and you might find yourself too energized when your head hits the pillow.

What to Do If Sleep Doesn’t Come Easy

Here’s the honest truth: there’s no magic trick. The simplest fix is to remove the patch about 90 minutes before bedtime so your body starts to wind down. Your brain is still on high alert as it's searching for it's next food source, but at least you're not compounding the problem by adding additional metabolic support.

Or… you can do what I do. I lean into it.

When I fast, my productivity skyrockets. My brain feels clearer. My focus sharpens. I’ll stockpile work for my fasting days because I know I’ll get more done in those windows than I ever could with a full stomach.

Now, I'm not doing any heavy lifting with my job. I don't operate a forklift. Keep that in mind. If you're a school teacher and you show up Wednesday morning on zero sleep, I can't guarantee you're students are going to love you, but you'll catch up. If you're routinely keeping up with your fasting schedule, that means you're sensible about your health and it is a priority. If you're in good health, your body will naturally catch up on sleep. You simply have to be strategic with your fasting schedule.

So if you’re not sleeping? Maybe don’t fight it. Use that energy. Write. Work. Create. Get ahead. You’ll be surprised what you can accomplish.

Fasting and Autophagy - The Other Side of the Pillow

Sometimes you just gotta take the bad with the good... #autophagy

The bigger picture is this: the very thing that makes you restless—the heightened alertness, the extra energy—is also the signal that your body has entered deeper repair mode. That’s autophagy, your built-in cellular recycling system. It’s not always comfortable, but it’s powerful. Old, damaged cells get cleared away so new, healthier ones can take their place. So yes, fasting can come with a few restless nights, but it also unlocks one of the most profound benefits of all: a complete cellular reset.

Turning a Side Effect Into a Superpower

Yes, sleep may feel elusive when you’re fasting. But instead of seeing that as a setback, try reframing it as one of fasting’s hidden benefits: a burst of energy that lets you do more.

So remove the patch if you want to rest. Or keep it on, grab your laptop or guitar, and embrace the focus.

Because whether you’re sleeping or creating, fasting with The Fast Patch is always working for you—retraining your brain, supporting autophagy, and helping you build a healthier, leaner body from the inside out.

In no world (Rx/Medical or Vitamin) do you ever want to use a product to counteract the side-effects of another product, but ZZzz-Time is a daily. It's an all-natural sleep aid, yes, but it's also a daily dose of 5-HTP. This is a precursor to serotonin. It's a building block of serotonin which is also known as the happy molecule. If you're on an SSRI, this is a great daily to supplement your SSRI.
